Eversholt Rail Limited commissioned GoLink Advisory Group to deliver a comprehensive freight market consultancy assignment supporting the development of a long-term freight locomotive leasing strategy. The engagement covered a full appraisal of Eversholt Rail’s existing Class 66 portfolio and its future investment needs, including an assessment of locomotive demand, competitiveness against emerging traction, and the implications of the UK rail industry’s decarbonisation trajectory.
GoLink evaluated whether large-scale investment in upgrading the Class 66 fleet represented value for money over new traction offers a more compelling operational and financial proposition.
GoLink provided Eversholt with a detailed review of future locomotive demand, both near-term and long-term, to inform Eversholt Rail’s potential investment in new traction.
This encompassed what freight operators require today given infrastructure constraints, how demand may evolve under different market and network scenarios, and whether the introduction of new locomotives would provide a stable long-term investment platform.
The European locomotive supply market was studied in detail, having assessed the likelihood of new entrants such as Alstom or Siemens competing with Stadler, driven by potential fleet demand linked to the Government’s Rail Freight Growth Target.
Sam Gillert, Account Manager, Eversholt Rail Limited said "We used the GoLink team for an in-depth study into the UK (and Europe) rail freight market. The team was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and responsive, throughout our project. They took the time to understand what we wanted and then strived to deliver findings that on completion of the work, exceeded our expectations. As a result, we have a strong body of work to enable a thorough review of our strategy for rail freight investment in the future.”
This strategic review integrated insights on economic growth, freight market trends, network capacity, electrification, and terminal development - providing Eversholt Rail with a robust, evidence-based pathway for shaping its freight locomotive portfolio for the next two decades.
Adam Parkinson, Director commented “We are proud to support Eversholt Rail on this unique assignment with clear, evidence-led insight to shape the next generation of UK freight locomotive investment.”
